Mumzilla

20130512-221927.jpg

My mum (or Mumzilla as she is fondly known….the origins of this remain unclear but may reside in some sort of Godzilla reference ….. which mum can do a pretty good impression of when in a rage) isn’t perfect. No on is perfect and to say my mum is somehow an exception to the rule would make this post no better than a typical cupcakes and bunny rabbits Hallmark card. What I love about my mum is that my mum knows and accepts she isn’t perfect and is therefore always striving to become a better Christian, Human and a better Mum. It also means that when one of her many amazing and wonderful children stuffs up she is there for us with her own lessons and experiences to share. Although she always expects the best from us we know she will be there when we are at our worst. And she’s always got time for a cup of tea.

My mum is a unique and complicated person. She is giving to the point of self sacrifice. She is hard working to extremes that none of us could ever match. She is stubborn, crazy and a little OCD but she is also fun, passionate and intelligent. My mum inspires me to aim for the stars and to expect nothing less than greatness from my life. My mum is an animal maniac and can’t seem to stop turning her small house into a zoo, with animals out numbering people to a scary ratio. She is brave, obsessive, dramatic, creative and beautiful, inside & out,

What I am so thankful for is that my mum is one of my best friends and I know that will never change. We may fight until we cry but then we hug and say sorry, like all friends do. We have gne through good and bad times together and have always been there for each other to get though the stress. Every day I grow more like my mum and unlike some people that isn’t something I mind at all, if I can be half the woman she is I’ll be happy.

So Thank you mum. Thank you for not compromising who you are for what some people expect. Thank you for standing up for your beliefs even when they challenge the norms. Thank you for sharing your lives with us so that we could flourish and grow, knowing you are there when we fall.

I could go on forever with lists of things I am grateful for so il stop with this: Thank you for being my best friend and forgiving my many mistakes, being there all those times I needed you most. I’m sorry I’m not the perfect daughter, but just like you I will keep trying very day to be me a better person.

Love you mum x

Friday’s Letters: Thrown in the deep end

20130315-220709.jpg

Dear Bay of Islands: I miss you. Once I have children (no not right now) I will be bringing them here all the time!! Dear Job: After so many rejections it was like a dream to apply, interview and get a contract all in 5 hours. One day later and I had an 8 hour shift! Granted I feel totally out if my depth but I’m a fast learner I hope. Dear Callie: Thank you for giving us the perfect welcome home with cuddles and attention left, right and centre! We won’t leave you alone again any time soon my fur baby. Dear Edd: I wish I was as smart and awesome as you. But now we are married I own half your property, does that include your brain? I think so!! Dear Wedding Photos: Well worth the wait.

January Beauty Favorites

20130131-170725.jpgWell I don’t think anyone knows where January went…feels like it was Christmas last week and New Years yesterday so needless to say this year will fly by. Also there are 18 days until the wedding….yup, 18. Am I stressed out silly? A teeny bit but all the main stuff is done and I’m just treating it like a party with my family and friends so that helps. Anywho, tangent over, lets get on with seeing what beauty products I have been loving this month! Its summer so heavy makeup is definitely out and glossy lips with tinted moisturizers are in.

20130131-170757.jpg#1: MUA Eyeshadow palette in Undressed (especially shades 2, 6 and 10). I love this palette, its a great compromise for us who can’t afford the Naked palettes haha. On the few nights this month where I wanted makeup on my eyes this was all I used, especially enjoying the golden shade 6 with the deep brown shade 10 in the crease. These shades have incredible pigmentation and glide on beautifully. All for 4 pounds! Below is a single sweep of three shades I have been using just to show how pretty they are!

20130131-170809.jpg

20130131-171342.jpg#2: Dove tinted moisturizer in Beige. Please excuse this rough and dirty bottle, this thing goes everywhere with me. Not a new product for sure, my mum actually bought me this ages ago and I have repurchased a couple times since. It is my favorite tinted moisturizer for a couple of reasons. For example it doesn’t irritate my extremely sensitive skin, it gives me a nice complexion and even tone without putting a thick layer of makeup over it and it also has a bit of SPF in it which means its not a disaster when I forget my sunscreen. This month has been lots of beach and pool days so this light moisturizer has been perfect and I haven’t used anything else.

20130131-171326.jpg#3: Nivea lip balm in Pink Guava. This has been my lip balm of choice most days because it smells and tastes AMAZING! Moisture wise its average, for me it works fine unless my lips are quite dry and need repair. This gives my lips a nice pink, rosy tint and its only around $4 which is nice :)

20130131-171419.jpg#4: Revlon Kissable Balm Stain in Honey. The other lip product I have been using is one of the balm stains I have. The funny thing is that this shade (Honey) is one I would have passed over in an instant! Yet I kept seeing Chelsea (confessionsofabeautyaddict.com – great beauty blog so pop over and check it out!) rave about this shade in particular on twitter and her blog and so I chose it before even trying. Thank goodness I did because this has been the most used balm stain out of the 4 I have. It is such an easy to wear, my lips but better shade that I see it becoming a staple in my handbag.

20130131-171356.jpg#5: Peach Blossom petit parfum by Urban Rituelle. I picked this fragrance up when shopping with my mum at Forever New for $20 and it is gorgeous! A beautiful summery fragrance that is fresh and fruity with a little floral thrown in for good measure. Pretty much smells like peach iced tea to me! Its convenient little size means it is the perfect handbag scent and I wore it almost all of this month. Its a strong scent so 1 spray is enough however it doesn’t last all day. I am craving their ginger scent in this range that smells like a Chai latte strangely enough…

20130131-170940.jpg#6: Essie’s Demure Vixen. Last up is my nail polish favorite of the month and for January it is this gorgeous nude from Essie that is one of my all time favorite shades. Aptly named this shade is slightly darker than a true nude with a purple undertone. Added to this is a subtle violet shimmer that creates a lavender sheen to this nude, unlinke anything else I have seen. The day I run out of this will be a sad one as it is truly gorgeous.

Well that’s it for this month! February holds a lot of excitement and I can’t wait to share it with you all :) xx

December Beauty Favorites

20130105-170658.jpg

Hi All! So in November my favorites kind of got lost in the chaos of life so although these are my December favorites these products have been ones I also used a lot in November.

1. Palmer’s Olive Butter Formula Body Lotion
So this has been my hands down favorite body moisturizer for two months now. For only $12 (if memory serves correctly) this giant sized product is a great moisturizer, has a lovely fresh scent (not sure if it smells particularly like olives or not…) and doesn’t irritate my sensitive pain in the ass skin. Great product that I see becoming a central part of my moisturizing routine year round as it isn’t too heavy and greasy.

2. Elizabeth Arden: Green Tree Tropical Perfume
I picked this up a while ago as it was on a great special for like $30 and had a nice fresh and fruity scent which I thought would be useful in Summer. Well I was right and I have worn it almost every day this month. Not a super strong scent which I quite like at this time of year. Smells a little floral to me but more so tropical in the fruity sense of the word. Still pining after the Green Tea with Cherry Blossom scent that has been on my wishlist for ages :(

3. Maybelline MegaPlush Volume Express Mascara
My lovely Mum bought me a bunch of beauty related products a while ago and this is my favorite of the bunch! When I first started using it I was a little underwhelmed but after using it more regularly it has grown on me a lot. First off, the volume is there but not incredibly so. I have pathetic lashes so it isn’t an easy job I should add. Instead of volume I notice more so the definition it brings to my lashes as it never clumps for me. The thing I love most about this mascara is the formula. It’s a bit wet but I have no issues with application and the best thing is that it feels like I’m not wearing any product on my lashes. This makes it so much easier to apply any extra coats without clumping or incredibly caked on lashes.

4. Maybelline Colour Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze
I talked previously about another favorite in this line (Bold Gold) and this is another favorite that I reach for a lot! This neutral bronze colour is an easy eyelid fix when I can’t be bothered putting much makeup on and also provides the perfect base to a neutral smokey eye. Lasts for ages on my eyes (for example it’s still there in the morning if I forget to remove makeup before bed *bad lizzy*!) and helps my other eyeshadows last longer without moving around or creasing.

5. MUA Lipstick in Shade 01
I posted an intial review/haul of my MUA products and this lipstick is probably one of my favorites of the bunch. A beautiful wine red colour that feels moisturizing and lasts a decent amount of time. Best thing about it is that it cost 1 pound.

6. MOA Green Balm
I received this in my first SampleBar box back in November and was also very kindly scent a second one from my lovely friend Karen from BalmainBeauty. The product is a balm with oils like tea tree oil and melaleuca which I use on the lips, cuticles, hands, any sores or scratches and where ever needs a little moisture.

7. OPI The Spy Who Loved Me
Edd very kindly bought this for me at Christmas so technically I have only had it a little while but it was such a great christmas red that I had to include it! A stunning bright red (perfect for the NZ summer) that is full of golden shimmer. The gold isn’t as incredible as it looks in the bottle but still creates a lit from within red that I will reach for again and again.

So there are my favorites for this month and last! I hope everyone had a great end to 2012!

Xx

Friday’s Letters: The End of an Era

Dear University: Monday’s exam marked the end of my 4 years in a conjoint degree. It’s a bittersweet feeling because the last 4 years have been the best of my life but also the most stressful and emotionally testing times I have ever experienced. Thankyou for the lessons I have learnt and the people I have met. Dear Mum: Perhaps the biggest thing I will miss about Uni is going to be the weekly coffees and catch-ups! Thank you for the amazing support you have given for me and for showing me how high I can reach. Dear Callie: Three things I love about you at the moment- Your morning kisses that wake me up (although its a little gross and painful), The way you rock your stumpy tail and look cuter than ever, even with a shaved bum! And the fact that you are terrified of the cat door. Okay the last one is actually kind of annoying…please try and get used to the cat door! It would make life so much easier for me and Edd. Dear Sensitive Skin: I know you are a sensitive soul, just like me, but you are totally frustrating me and ruining any self-confidence I have with your unpredictable nature. Dear Novels: I missed you during the school year and am so unbelievably happy to be able to start reading again without the feelings of guilt that I should be reading textbooks or lecture notes again. Dear Edd: Thank you for offering to come with me to Breaking Dawn Part 2 when I had no one else to go with. I know you can’t stand them at all and that’s how I know you are my best friend.

Easy Lemonade Scones!

Hi All!

So today I thought I would throw up a quick recipe! I don’t have a great track record with Scones, I love them yet despite being heralded as an easy thing to bake I tend to end up with rock hard cakes that don’t really taste that great. I’m not sure where I go wrong but after enjoying my Nana’s scones time and time again I finally asked her for her recipe and was pleasantly surprised to receive what appeared to be even easier than other scone recipes. So, don’t b e scared by the use of lemonade as these scones come out amazingly fluffy and tasty. My poor photos aren’t the best communicators of deliciousness but with such cheap ingredients I think you should just give it a try!

Seeing as it is now the beginning of Spring here in New Zealand I thought I would share 10 of my Spring nail polishes that are in my collection. I love spring colours! The mints, lilacs and peaches make my heart sing! I try to include a variety of nail polish brands and colours but am limited by what my collection includes. Please leave a comment if you have any other recommendations or favorites to share! I love hearing what other people think and love, especially when it comes to nail polish!!

Father’s Day and Cupcake Madness

Hi All!

So today is supposed to be a “made me smile” post but that isn’t going to happen until tomorrow night sadly! I think I may move it to Monday nights as I seem incapable of posting Sundays. So this is a brief one!

Today was Father’s Day here in New Zealand and I am lucky enough to have an amazing Dad who is clever, generous, quirky, loving and most inportantly has great taste in music! To treat him Edd and I took him to see the new remake of Total Recall, an absolute classic sci fi with good ole arnie and some cringeworthy special effects that me and Dad used to love!! The remake surpassed my expectations and I was very pleasantly suprised! The two boys enjoyed it too.

After this Edd and I got home and I got into some crazy mini cupcake baking madness. It’s now 11.16pm and my 40+ mini cupcakes are baked and taste delish! Tomorrow morning = icing!!
Why you may ask did I decide 10pm would be a good time to bake what felt like 100 cupcakes? Tomorrow there is some food thingy on at the University where I go and my mum works and her departments food stall was in desperate need for some vanilla mini cupcakes! Cue baking session. In return I get to feast on all the other food that will be on display, a fair compromise me thinks!!
So all in all a busy night with not much time left for blogging.

Hope everyone had an amazing weekend!!

Xx

The Start

To anyone out in the vast space of the internet who happens across this, my first ever stumble into the world of blogging Hi!

I am Lizzy, a university student in Auckland, New Zealand

This blog is undecided in terms of what it exactly is or will be…kinda like myself!

However my interests range from beauty, nail polish (a big obsession), general life situations/trying to be a happier and more peaceful person and of course the occasional fox (my favorite animal despite never seeing one in my life-terrible really!). I also love to read, watch movies and have a big interest in the field of psychology where I hope to end up one day!

Anyway, we shall see where this road leads us
